Gail Emms MBE is one of Britain’s most accomplished badminton players and a highly respected keynote speaker, coach, and broadcaster. Best known for her silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in the mixed doubles, Gail has represented her country with distinction across World, European, and Commonwealth competition. Her career brought her multiple international titles, including World and European golds, as well as two Commonwealth Games gold medals. Since retiring, she has become a leading advocate for women in sport, a commentator, and an inspirational voice on resilience, teamwork, and achieving potential.

Gail’s rise in badminton began in the mid-1990s, when she was first selected to represent England. Alongside her natural talent, she combined academic achievement with sporting ambition, graduating with a BSc in Sports Science from Kingston University in 1998 before turning professional with the support of UK Sport lottery funding. Her partnership with Nathan Robertson proved decisive in shaping her career, as the duo became one of the world’s leading mixed doubles pairs. Their silver medal at the 2004 Olympics put badminton firmly in the British sporting spotlight, while victories at the European Championships in 2004 and the World Championships in 2006 confirmed their place among the very best.

Over more than a decade at the top, Gail earned an impressive collection of medals at every level, from junior through to senior competition. In addition to her Olympic success, she was a double European champion, a Commonwealth Games double gold medallist, and World Champion in 2006. For her contribution to British sport, she was awarded an MBE in 2009. After retiring from competition, she channelled her passion into coaching, mentoring, and media work, joining the Badminton England coaching team in 2013 and becoming a familiar voice in coverage of major tournaments.

In 2024, Gail added author to her list of achievements with the publication of ‘The Lost Lionesses: The Incredible Story of England’s Forgotten Trailblazers’, a moving account of the 1971 England women’s football team. Today, she continues to inspire as a speaker and host, offering audiences lessons from elite sport while championing equality, ambition, and resilience. With her articulate style and authentic storytelling, Gail Emms remains one of the most engaging and motivational voices in British sport.

Official Testimonials

Gail Emms is regularly booked to engage audiences at events, read their latest feedback below:

“Gail was an extremely charming, entertaining and inspiring guest. Her kindness in speaking individually to nearly all of our ladies, some of whom are quite elderly, was much appreciated. She was also my very funny neighbour while we ate our lunch!”

Derby Womens Luncheon Club

“Just wanted to say an official thank you for booking Gail Emms for our sports awards evening last night.  Gail was fantastic!  We had so many positive comments from girls, parents and staff at the end that we were overwhelmed. Gail’s speech was sincere, genuine and a real positive message to all of our students.  I hope that she enjoyed the evening as much as we did.”

Julie, Nottingham Girls High School

“Gail Emms is an excellent public speaker – she held the audience for all 45 mins of her talk which documented her journey from playing sport at the participation level through to high performance and on to Olympic success. Articulate, humorous and confident during the talk, approachable for short conversations with interested attendees afterwards. This was a brilliant event.”

James, Anglia Ruskin University

“What an amazing assembly. I have never heard applause at the end of any assembly or even the staff band like that (in 12 years) Spoke to some girls who were really inspired to. I have been fortunate enough through sport to have heard many people and talked with them on 1:1 but she absolutely topped the list. The message of trying and not giving up and saying how she had failed and carried on gave life message that many girls will take on board.”
