Charlotte Henshaw MBE is one of Britain’s most accomplished Paralympians, celebrated for her remarkable success across both swimming and paracanoe. A four time Paralympian and winner of three Paralympic gold medals alongside 11 World Championship titles, Charlotte is admired for her resilience, adaptability and relentless pursuit of excellence. Having competed at the highest level in two completely different sports, she is hired as an inspirational leadership speaker to share powerful lessons on overcoming adversity, embracing change and sustaining peak performance. Her story resonates with corporate audiences, sports organisations and leadership teams seeking insight into mindset, determination and inclusion.
Born with a condition that resulted in both legs being amputated at just 15 months old, Charlotte began swimming at the age of four and quickly developed into an elite athlete. She first represented Great Britain at the Danish Open when she was only 16 years old before balancing her sporting ambitions with academic achievement, graduating from the University of Stirling with a degree in Psychology and Sports Studies in 2009. That same year marked a breakthrough in her sporting career as she claimed her first World Championship gold medal in swimming, having already competed at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008 where she narrowly missed the podium with a fourth place finish. Over the following years, Charlotte established herself as one of Britain’s leading Paralympic swimmers, winning silver at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, bronze at Rio 2016 and setting world and European records along the way.
Following Rio, Charlotte made the bold decision to retire from swimming and transition into paracanoe, demonstrating extraordinary courage and adaptability. She immediately made an impact, winning a medal at her first European Championships in the sport before securing her first World Championship gold in paracanoe in 2018. She later became the world leading time holder for the KL2 200m event and achieved Paralympic gold at Tokyo 2020 before winning two more gold medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. In 2025, she added another World Championship title to her collection. Her achievements were recognised nationally when she was awarded an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours.
Charlotte is hired as a speaker for her honest and inspiring perspective on leadership, resilience and inclusion. Drawing on her experiences competing at the highest level across two sports, she speaks passionately about adapting to change, building confidence and performing under pressure. Her engaging talks explore diversity and inclusion, overcoming adversity and maintaining a winning mindset, leaving audiences with practical lessons on resilience, ambition and personal growth.
