Swim, Bike, Run: Our Triathlon Story

Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, universally recognised as the Brownlee Brothers, stand among the most accomplished and influential figures in triathlon history. Their dominance in the sport has not only earned them multiple Olympic medals but also positioned them as respected voices on high performance, leadership and resilience. Alistair made history by becoming the only athlete to win two Olympic gold medals in the individual triathlon at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games, while Jonathan secured bronze in 2012, silver in 2016, and added an Olympic gold in the Mixed Relay at Tokyo 2020. Their shared journey has delivered some of triathlon’s most memorable moments, including the widely admired instance at the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Cozumel, where Alistair sacrificed his own race to help an exhausted Jonathan cross the finish line.

Born in 1988, Alistair’s career has been defined by his relentless pursuit of excellence across multiple distances. In addition to his Olympic triumphs, he claimed two World Triathlon Championships (2009, 2011), four European Championships (2010, 2011, 2014, 2019), a Commonwealth Games gold medal (2014), and a World Aquathlon Championship (2016). His versatility extended into long-course racing, achieving runner-up positions at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2018 and 2019. Educated at Bradford Grammar School and later at the University of Leeds, where he earned a degree in Sports Science and Physiology, Alistair complemented his academic achievements with a Master’s degree in Finance from Leeds Metropolitan University. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sport, he was appointed MBE in 2013 and an MBE in 2025. Alistair retired from professional triathlon in 2024, concluding a remarkable career that solidified his place among the sport’s all-time greats.

Jonathan, born in 1990, continues to build on his impressive legacy. He was crowned Triathlon World Champion in 2012 and has won six World Championship titles across various disciplines, including two World Sprint Championships and three World Triathlon Mixed Relay titles. In addition to his Olympic medals, Jonathan consistently excelled on the Super League Triathlon circuit, finishing third overall in both 2021 and 2022. His academic journey saw him follow a similar path to Alistair, attending Bradford Grammar School before earning a History degree from the University of Leeds. Like his brother, Jonathan has been honoured for his services to triathlon, receiving an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours.
