Danny Crates is a former Paralympic gold medallist, 800m world record holder, and accomplished broadcaster whose extraordinary career has made him one of the UK’s most respected high-performance speakers. Known for his energy, authenticity, and ability to inspire, Danny shares the mindset that led him from personal adversity to global sporting success. As a BBC reporter and Director of 1404 Performance Ltd, he brings a unique blend of elite sport, media, and leadership experience to every stage. His story demonstrates that success is not defined by circumstance but by the choices made in pursuit of excellence.

Danny’s journey to the pinnacle of Paralympic sport began after a life-changing accident that resulted in the loss of his right arm. Refusing to let this setback define him, he rebuilt his life through determination and focus, initially returning to competitive rugby before discovering athletics. His talent and work ethic quickly became evident when he made his Paralympic debut at the Sydney Games in 2000, winning a bronze medal in the 400m. Four years later, he returned to the global stage at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, where he claimed gold in the 800m, setting a new world record and cementing his place among the sport’s elite.

Across an exceptional career, Danny went on to win multiple gold medals at the Paralympic World Cup and World Championships, finishing with a total of eleven international titles before retiring from athletics in 2009. His achievements earned him the honour of being Great Britain’s flag bearer at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Beyond sport, he has established himself as a prominent media figure, presenting Channel 4’s BAFTA-winning coverage of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and leading their Rio 2016 team. His versatility extended beyond sport when he reached the quarter-finals of Celebrity MasterChef in 2015 and became a reporter for the BBC’s ‘Food: Truth or Scare’.

Today, as Director of 1404 Performance Ltd, Danny works with global organisations to deliver his acclaimed “Five Pillars of Performance” framework, helping teams and individuals achieve sustainable success. He is hired as a speaker for his proven ability to inspire through real-world lessons in resilience, adaptability, and peak performance — qualities that make his story as impactful in the boardroom as it was on the track.
