Eddie The Eagle: My Story
Eddie The Eagle: My Story

Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards is one of the most iconic figures in British sport, remembered as the unlikely ski jumper who captured hearts at the 1988 Winter Olympics. As the first athlete to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping, his courage, persistence, and refusal to give up made him an instant national hero. Although he finished last in both the 70m and 90m events, his story became a symbol of determination and the Olympic spirit, inspiring generations who admired his willingness to chase a dream against all odds.

Born in Gloucestershire, Eddie originally pursued downhill skiing and narrowly missed out on selection for the 1984 Olympic Games. Lacking the funding to continue in that discipline, he switched to ski jumping — a sport in which Britain had no active competitors. By default he became the nation’s number one jumper, but qualification was still an uphill battle. He trained with limited resources, borrowed equipment, and unorthodox methods, yet by 1987 he had competed at the World Championships and secured his place at Calgary the following year. During the Olympics, he set a British record jump of 73.5m, holding that title until 2001.

Eddie’s underdog tale extended beyond sport. His Calgary performances sparked such public affection that the International Olympic Committee introduced stricter qualifying standards, unofficially known as the “Eagle Rule.” Despite not qualifying for future Games, he remained a household name, appearing regularly on television and becoming the subject of advertising campaigns. In 2016, his story was brought to cinemas in the hit biopic ‘Eddie the Eagle’, starring Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, which grossed over $46 million worldwide and further cemented his reputation as Britain’s most loveable sporting outsider.

Since then, Eddie has built a second career as a motivational speaker and media personality. He has appeared on shows such as ‘Splash!’, ‘The Jump’, ‘The Masked Dancer’, and ‘Dancing on Ice’, while also lending his voice to commentary and documentaries. His autobiography, ‘Eddie the Eagle: My Story’, details the humour and hardship of his remarkable journey. In his speeches, Eddie shares candid lessons about resilience, ambition, and finding success through perseverance, leaving audiences entertained, inspired, and reminded that greatness is not only about victory but also about daring to try.

David, SafeStart International

“Eddie was an excellent speaker at our event – more than happy to mingle with our guests and do anything that might help us raise a few more pounds for charity on the night. Eddie’s speech was both hilarious and inspiring, which was absolutely key with the occasion being an awards night for previously vulnerable young people. His message resonated with both the award winners and the audience, and we’d gladly have him back any time!”

James, Inner Flame

“The event was a huge success yesterday, Eddie was absolutely brilliant! Feedback so far has been hugely positive and Twitter coverage was huge for our area. Please do pass my thanks on to him once again for joining us, delivering an inspirational talk and then talking the time to meet with everyone that wanted pictures and to say “hi” to him once he had finished. An absolute gent!”
