Baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller has spent her career at the intersection of national security, science, and global leadership. Best known as the former Director-General of MI5, she was responsible for steering Britain’s domestic intelligence service through a period defined by the aftermath of 9/11 and the growing threat of Al-Qaeda. Her work placed her at the heart of counter-terrorism efforts, from the fight against the Provisional IRA to overseeing responses to international threats such as Lockerbie. In 2024, she made history as the first woman to be appointed Chancellor of the Order of the Garter, confirming her place as one of Britain’s most respected public figures.
Eliza’s path to leadership was far from conventional. She began her career as a school teacher before joining the Security Service, where she quickly specialised in counter-terrorism. Over the years, she held a series of senior positions, working with US intelligence during the Gulf War, directing surveillance operations, and eventually becoming Deputy Director-General in 1997. By the time she was appointed Director-General in 2002, she had already built a reputation for calm, strategic decision-making in high-pressure environments. Her tenure saw major reforms within MI5, including its expansion and modernisation to meet 21st-century security challenges.
After stepping down in 2007, Eliza continued to serve in senior leadership roles across some of the UK’s most influential institutions. She became the first female Chair of the Wellcome Trust, one of the world’s largest biomedical charities, and Co-President of Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs. She also chaired Imperial College London’s Court and Council, helping to shape the future of one of the world’s leading universities. Her contribution to public life has been recognised with numerous honours, including being named a Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath, a Lady Companion of the Order of the Garter, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society in 2025.
