Push Past Impossible
Push Past Impossible

Ryan Stramrood is a South African extreme open water and ice swimmer who has built a reputation as one of the world’s most accomplished endurance athletes and an exceptional high-performance keynote speaker. Over the course of more than a decade, he has captivated organisations with compelling stories drawn from the most hostile oceans on the planet. His work challenges audiences to consider what is truly possible when resilience, mindset, and courage are pushed to their limits. Known for tackling the coldest and most dangerous waters, he has turned his remarkable feats of endurance into transformative learning experiences for corporate and professional audiences.

Ryan’s journey began in Cape Town, where an early passion for swimming developed into a drive to test the boundaries of physical and mental capability. What started as a personal challenge evolved into a lifelong pursuit of extreme open water and ice swimming. Alongside his athletic ambitions, he has successfully built and managed a media sales business, demonstrating a rare ability to balance entrepreneurial responsibilities with rigorous athletic preparation. This dual career shaped his understanding of discipline and performance both in the water and in business environments.

His athletic accomplishments are globally recognised. Ryan has completed more than 120 Robben Island crossings and became the first person to swim across False Bay from Miller’s Point to Rooi-Els, a demanding 33 kilometres, completed in just over eight hours. He is the first swimmer to complete the Big Five Swims in Western Cape waters. He contributed to the first official ice mile south of the Antarctic Circle and continues to pioneer in extreme conditions, earning four Guinness World Records across his swimming career. His most recent ultra-endurance challenge saw him complete a 16-hour 50-minute solo, unassisted swim around St Helena Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. As a Founding Member of the International Ice Swimming Association, he has played a central role in shaping and regulating the sport worldwide. His book, ‘Push Past Impossible’, further shares his insights into embracing discomfort and achieving breakthrough performance.

These extraordinary experiences are the foundation of Ryan’s high-performance speaking career. His sessions are not simply motivational; they provide practical strategies that translate the mindset of survival and success in freezing waters into tools for performance in the workplace. His TEDx talk, titled “Gaining The Edge”, compellingly illustrates how extreme environments reveal the power of mindset and the untapped potential within us all. Ryan brings audiences into the heart of his challenges, illustrating how ordinary individuals can accomplish extraordinary outcomes through resilience, teamwork, and unwavering belief. His presentations inspire lasting behavioural change by empowering people to overcome fear, embrace difficult goals, and perform beyond perceived limits. Engaging, credible, and transformational, Ryan Stramrood is the ideal choice for organisations seeking a speaker who genuinely shifts perspectives, delivers measurable impact, and helps leaders and teams perform when it matters most.
