Former Javelin World Record Holder & Leading Olympic Motivational Speaker

  • Appointed MBE
  • Commentated at the Paris 2024 Games
  • Commonwealth gold in Auckland
  • Only British track and field competitor to medal at three consecutive Olympic Games

Steve Backley is one of Britain’s most decorated track and field athletes and a leading voice in motivational speaking. As a former world record holder in the javelin and the only British track and field competitor to medal at three consecutive Olympic Games, he has left an enduring legacy in sport. With two Olympic silver medals, one bronze, and a remarkable seven golds from European and Commonwealth Championships, Steve became a symbol of consistency and resilience over more than a decade at the highest level. Since retiring in 2004, he has built a successful career as a broadcaster, commentator, and keynote speaker, inspiring audiences to unlock their full potential.

Steve’s journey began in the late 1980s, when his natural ability with the javelin quickly propelled him to the forefront of British athletics. By 1990, he had claimed Commonwealth gold in Auckland, the first of his four consecutive European Championship titles that would later earn him an OBE. Alongside these achievements, Steve broke the world record three times, setting standards in the sport that inspired a generation of athletes. His breakthrough Olympic medal came in Barcelona in 1992, followed by silver medals in Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000 – a feat that remains unmatched by any other British track and field competitor.

Beyond the medals, Steve’s longevity and professionalism became defining aspects of his career. Even at his final Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, he reached the final and finished fourth, demonstrating the determination and resilience that made him one of Britain’s most respected athletes. Alongside his competitive career, he earned recognition from the Crown, being appointed MBE in 1995 and OBE in 2003 for services to athletics. His autobiography and subsequent public speaking career have allowed him to share the principles of focus, perseverance, and maintaining peak performance under pressure.

Today, Steve is as well known for his voice as he once was for his throw. He played a key role in the BBC’s coverage of the London 2012 Olympics and most recently commentated at the Paris 2024 Games. As a speaker, he delivers powerful lessons on leadership, resilience, and goal-setting, weaving stories from his sporting life with practical advice for business and education. Steve’s approachable style and proven track record of success make him a compelling choice for any event seeking to inspire ambition and lasting performance.
